The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Thanks to Adverlets.com I got to watch The Sorcerer's Apprentice a week before it releases in Malaysia. :D

Here's the plot summary by Walt Disney Pictures:
Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Cast:
Nicolas Cage as Balthazar Blake

Jay Baruchel as Dave Stutler

Monica Bellucci as Veronica

Alfred Molina as Maxim Hovarth

Gregory Woo as Sun-Lok

Teresa Palmer as Becky

Toby Kebbell as Drake Stone

The rest of the cast:
Alice Krige as Morgana

Review:
I won't go into detail on the storyline and spoil you. So these are just my views about the movie.

Very honestly, I'm on the fence with this movie. I neither love it nor hate it. haha. This is a movie that is entertaining and engaging in that it is fast-paced, action-packed and comes with a splatter of mild comedy. The only pet peeve I have is the overused plot of how the world is going to be destroyed (it always is) and a stereotypical nerdy guy is destined to save the world but doesn't want the fate that he has. And of course there always has to be the "out of his league" hot chick (remind u of another movie starring Jay Baruchel?) that the nerdy hero loves and now he has to save the day and get the girl of his dreams. Owh and there's a love triangle that caused the bitter rivalry between Balthazar and Horvath. :-/

The first thing that came to mind when I heard of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was the 1940 animated short in the Disney film "Fantasia". And it was cute to see that this movie paid homage to the famous scene where Mickey Mouse uses magic to control the mops and scrubs but it all goes out of control. Very nice touch. :)

Comedy wise, the movie relies heavily on Dave Stutler's nerdy antics with his Master Balthazar, stammering lines when talking to Becky and generally nerdy awkward moments (which seems like second nature to Jay Baruchel). There's also Maxim Horvath's helper Drake Stone the narcissistic British sorcerer-turn-stage magician performer as a sort of comic relief character. Generally, it's not that the movie wasn't funny, it was...erm...there just weren't many "laugh out loud" moments though I did chuckle quite a bit throughout the movie. :)

I kinda felt confused at one point because I thought that the Grimhold (the Matryoshka Dolls or Russian Nesting Dolls) contained evil sorcerers in each layer, and that each sorcerer "released" should be more powerful than the previous. Well, the inner most doll contained Morgana who could raise the dead and destroy the world. So naturally I thought that after Maxim (the first to be released), the others would be harder to handle...but alas I was wrong. :C Kinda sad because I felt the "Little Witch" Abigail could have been a potentially eerie nemesis. Heck, after the movie...I don't even know what powers she has...or had (to be precise).

My favourite parts in the movie have got to be the dragon bits. Once when the dragon ring "comes alive" and wraps itself around Dave's finger (as seen in the trailer) and another time when a huge dragon chases and attacks Dave in Chinatown (also shown in the trailer).

The visuals in the movie are of course very "magical", for a lack of a better word. hehe. Gotta love the car morphing scenes and all the magical stuff they do in this movie. For that 2 hours, you feel like you're immersed in a world where magic is real. And well, they did say it was partly scientific (something about physics and using more than 10% of your brain).

In a nutshell:
I don't usually give ratings but this movie was a 5/10 for me (as mentioned I'm on the fence).
Ups: Very cool "magic" effects, dragons are always awesome, movie is fast paced and action packed.
Downs: Wasn't too fond of the nerdy-boy-turn-savior-of-the-world-and-gets-a-hot-chick cliché, the other bad guys could have been developed better.

Overall, The Sorcerer's Apprentice is definitely enjoyable and entertaining as long as you aren't particular about the cliché parts I mentioned earlier. :)

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is set to be released in Malaysian cinemas on the 22nd of July 2010!

Hugs n Kisses,
Di

  2. Nicolas Cage is back again in the The Sorcerer's Apprentice new action film, The performances are nothing short of excellent. Jay Baruchel does a great job playing his usual "nerdy" character, if you've seen movies like The Trotsky or She's Out of My League, or even the previews for this movie you'll know you're not seeing anything different. Nonetheless he still does a great job and we all love his job at playing Dave. I also loved Nicholas Cage a GREAT deal, and I don't normally like him, but he was great in Kick-Ass and Bad Lieutenant earlier this year, and I could kinda foretell he would continue his awesome streak, and he does so. He plays Balthazar very mysteriously yet comically. Also great was Alfred Molina as Maxim and Tony Kebbell's very flamboyant portrayal of Drake Stone.
